The FDA and Advanced Medical Optics alerted healthcare professionals and consumers who wear contact lenses of a contact solution recall involving several lots of Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution. The contact lens solution recall was based on increasing reports of a rare, but dangerous, eye infection, Acanthamoeba Keratitis which is caused by a parasite.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigated the outbreak of serious eye infections and linked Complete Moisture Plus contact solution with Acanthamoeba keratitis. This dangerous eye infection can lead to vision loss with some patients requiring a corneal transplant.
Symptoms of the Acanthamoeba infection include:
Many patients that have suffered a damaged cornea due to the recalled contact solution are left with permanent corneal damage. The only option for some people with vision loss is to undergo a cornea transplant. The biggest risk for this procedure is rejection of the corneal transplant. Rejection can occur at any time after the original transplant, even years after the procedure. Rejection occurs in 5-30% of all transplants and the risk increases if multiple transplants have to be performed.
If you or a loved one have experienced the dangerous eye infection Acanthamoeba keratitis following the use of Complete Moisture Plus contact lens solution or have had a cornea transplant you may have a claim against the manufacturer due to the contact solution recall.
