Contact Solution Recall
The Complete Moisture Plus contact solution recall was announced by the manufacturer Advanced Medical Optics in May 2007. This voluntary recall of several lots of their multipurpose contact lens solution followed increasing reports of serious eye infections caused by Acanthemoeba Keratitis (AK). On May 26, 2007 the FDA alerted health care professionals and their patients who wear contact lenses about the Complete Moisture recall and dangerous eye infection, AK, caused by a parasite which can lead to vision loss.
Serious Eye Infections
The recalled contact lens solution manufactured by AMO has been linked to a serious eye infection, Acanthamoeba keratitis, which is caused by a parasite. The link between the Moisture Plus contact solution and the eye infection was identified as a result of an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Acanthamoeba keratitis is a rare, but serious eye infection that can lead to vision loss requiring a corneal transplant in otherwise healthy people who wear contact lenses.
Cornea Transplant
The CDC estimated that contact lens users who used Complete Moisture Solution were subjected to at least a seven times greater risk of developing Acanthamoeba keratitis infections compared to the average consumer wearing contacts. This infection is very painful and can lead to permanent vision loss or blindness. Keratitis can cause severe damage to the cornea requiring a cornea transplant.
